Know Islamic War Ship Type

Along the development of navigation technology, shipbuilding technology was growing rapidly in the Islamic world. Technology is shipping the world's largest industrial power in the Middle Ages. At that time, Muslims have so many ports are crowded and dense.

And along the coastal cities of Islam many centers established manufacturing and assembly ship. Every Muslim country with a model ship and create different types. In addition to creating the vessel for purposes of trade, in this era of Muslims are also aggressively making warships.

Warship built to strengthen the Islamic Caliphate territory defense in the ocean. Thus, when the Islamic Caliphate was not only tough on the ground, but also strong in the ocean. So difficult to beat. More streamlined warships designed and controlled by the screen or paddle. Meanwhile, commercial ships built with sufficient width.

The design of such a ship can be deliberately created in order to bring goods in large numbers. In those days, most large warship capable of accommodating about 1,500 troops. Whereas a large merchant ship can accommodate 1,000 tons of goods.

According to Al-Hassan and Hill, at first warships were made in Egypt and Syria by experts shipbuilders topnotch. Construction of the ship made the same with ships built by the Byzantine navy. "The sailors were recruited from the local population, but the soldiers who supervise them are Arabs," explained Al-Hassan and Hill.

Over time, the shipping world increasingly advanced. Even the manufacture of ships and naval equipment as a whole into the eyes of the people of Islam at the time. As a result, Muslims became an expert in both branches of expertise related to the marine's. They are listed to make some important progress. Large ships capable they produce. Even they design such a large warship shini, large ships (Galley) 143 driven by oars.

In the year 326 AH (972 AD), explained Al-Hassan and Hill, the Caliph of Allah Din Dynasty Mu'izz Fathimiyyah become leaders in the manufacture of 600 ships shipyards Maqs in Egypt. One other large ships buttasa type, a sailing vessel that can sustain as many as 40 screens. "One of the ships of this type make a record with the ability to contain 1500 people, including crew and soldiers," said Al-Hasaan and Hill.

As for other types of vessels are Ghurab (literally means crow). So called perhaps based on the prow of the ship. Other species are shallandi ship, ships with large deck that is used to carry loads. Two of the ship's name came to Europe, even into the vocabulary of European languages and turned into corvett and challand.

Muslims are also able to build ships qurqura type , namely Cyprus, the large ship to carry the needs of the fleet. They also created several small boats that are designed for specific purposes, such as vessel for the supply of goods and weapons, communication from ship to ship to the shore, reconnaissance ships, and ships to pengeran and capture the enemy. "Most of the ship was rowed, but shubbak (Mediterranean fishing boats) has in addition to oars equipped also with a number of screens," said Al-Hassan and Hill.

Type of larger vessels could be used to bring the shooter missions and machines to remove the explosives and also to bring the crew members are skilled. As yet sophisticated shipping technology, naval battles took place in the distance. However, in its development, all ships equipped with grappling hook to close the outskirts of the enemy hull, so many battles in the end is determined by face-to-face fighting between the crews and sailors who were fighting

Islamic Economics - A Short History

Ahmed A.F. El-Ashker & Rodney Wilson, "Islamic Economics - A Short History"
Leiden-Boston | ISBN-13: 978-90-04-15134-5 | 450 Pages | Pdf | 2,2 Mb

Comparing the often sorry reality of the present day Islamic World with the Islamic World of yesterday with its many achievements, when Muslim governments were powerful and setbacks less disasterous, provides us, with the benefit of hindsight, rich empirical evidence and lessons to derive conclusions from. Historical evidence should be treated with caution however, as history has inherent distortions when it comes to extracting evidence, as the prevailing conditions of the past may differ from those dominant in the present.

History contains useful lessons to be learned, however, providing that this be received with an examining mind and an inquisitive attitude. In Islamic economics, historical examination can tell us that the Islamic system per se has the capability of providing an operational norm and the workable model, as long as the surrounding environment was helpful. As the present is an unbroken chain with the past, it is, in a similar historical fashion, a continual link with the future. And Islamic economics, in a historical sense, is no exception.

A History of Medieval Islam

A History of Medieval Islam
J.J.Saunders

Dr. Johnson, commenting in one of the Ramblers on the oblivion which overtook Richard Knolles’ Generall Historie of the Turkes (1603), despite its literary merits, explained this neglect on the ground that the author ‘employed his genius upon a foreign and uninteresting subject’ and recounted ‘enterprises and revolutions of which none desire to be informed.’ Indifference to Oriental history among the educated public of the West still exists, but is diminishing, and more ‘desire to be informed’ of the relations between Europe and Islam throughout the ages. Such recent works as Dr. Norman Daniel’s Islam and the West (1960) and Professor R.W. Southern’s Western Views of Islam in the Middle Ages (1962) provide striking evidence of the wider perspectives now being opened up, and as our historians cease to be Europe-centred and devote more attention to the nature and evolution of non-European societies, we may expect the history of the Muslim East to be studied with increasingly critical care.

The example of two friends

Allah has given us another opportunity to share with each other some advice which will remind us about the purpose of our lives inshallah. These advice are written and posted by Muslim youths just like you.
Islamic
Our belief in Allah needs to be strong and solid. Right now if I were to ask you "Is there a ground under you?" You would without a doubt say yes. Then if I asked "Is there a sky above you?" You would reply yes again without a doubt. Our belief in Allah should be so strong that if I was to ask "Is Allah watching you right now?" Without a doubt you should say yes. This type of belief doesn't come by sitting at home and doing nothing. We must work for it. Allah the Almighty has said in the Holy Quran: As for those who strive hard ``in Us`` (Our Cause), We will surely, guide them to Our Paths. (Surah Ankabut: 69).

Let me share a story with you. Two friends were travelling together. One was blind and the other could see. Now, when the night fell, they decided to take some rest and continue the journey in the morning. This area was such that in the day time the temperature increases pretty high but in the night the temperature decreases significantly. Much like the areas near the oceans. In the morning, the person who could see left to find some food. The blind man stayed behind and was just touching here and there around him. Now, what had happened at night is that one snake was passing by this place. But due to the extreme coldness, the snake became inactive, frozen, and straight. This blind man's hand fell on this snake and he thought that it's a very nice stick. He picked it up and became very happy. To a blind man, a good stick is a very valuable thing.

Later, the person who could see came back with some food and saw his friend touching a snake. So he shouted and said to throw it away. But the blind man insisted, you want this stick don't you? I am not going to throw it away. After trying hard, he couldn't convince the blind man to throw it away. Anyway, they continued their journey. Then the temperature began to rise and the snake started regaining its energy. When it received enough heat, it flexed its muscles and bit the blind man.

We can compare ourselves to this situation also. We are like this blind man and Prophet Muhammad (SAW) is like the person who could see. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) went to Miraj and saw the horrors of Hell and the blissfulness of Paradise. Now, the Prophet told us about many things to give up and stay away but because we can't see the dangers that's why we don't pay any attention to them. But when the time comes, we will get into serious problems. That is why, we should follow the rules and regulations of Islam.

( Love for Muhammad PBUH is the basic teaching of Islam.)... Islam is not terrorism nor backwordness, but Islam is teachings of peace. "Ashadunna La illaha illallahu Wa Ashadunna Muhammadan Wa Rasuluhu." "I bear witness that there is no god, but Allah, and Muhammad is His Last Messenger."

Making use of our youth-Advice to the Youth

allah picture-islamicDear friends, if Allah gives us 60 years to live then it comes to around 22,000 days (60x365). All these days Allah gives us to prepare for one day of interview with Allah. That is on the Day of Judgement. On that day, Allah will ask us some questions and He wants some correct answers. Allah is so merciful that He already told us what the questions will be through Quran and Ahadith. His mercy is so great that He even told us the answers to these questions. Now imagine, a student goes to write an exam. He opens his exam paper and finds the questions on one side. Then he finds that the answers to the questions are on the other side. Now after writting the exam, if this student still fails then what would we think of him? We would think that he is the dumbest person around. Well, tell you what, on the Day of Judgement, us people who knew the questions and answers will still fail! That is why, this is the time to wake up before we prove ourselves to be the dumbest of people.

Youth is the prime time of our lives. This is where people make important decisions like what to become in the future. Things you do in this time will most likely affect you throughout the rest of your life. That is why, it is important to bring Islam into your life during these days. Many people have the conception that when they get old then they will start practising Islam. Probably you and me also have this feeling. But look at it this way:
If you want to become a famous hockey player then you would start playing right from the youth. As you grow up, you will become better and better. But if you think that you will start playing when you are an old man then the chances of becoming famous is virtually zero. That's the reality. When we become old, we won't have enough energy to even stand up and pray.

Because youth is the prime time of your life, that is why it is very precious to Allah. Allah has prepared a shade on the Day of Judgement for those people who used to worship Allah in their youth. On that Day, there will be no other shade except the shade from the throne of Allah. Imagine standing outside on a very hot day under the sun for hours after hours. You would definately want some shadow to rest under. But what about that Day when the sun will be much nearer to us and the heat will be much more extreme. Wouldn't you want some shade on that day? Ofcourse you would!

You and I are all weak in terms of keeping our duties to Allah and Allah is aware of that. Allah wants that we keep trying to do our best. If a baby falls down while walking he tries to get up again and walk. He doesn't keep sitting down. Then a day comes when he does start to walk. Similarly, we should keep trying our best and not give up. A day will come when, Inshallah, we will be strong enough to obey Allah in every situation. Let us make a small promise to Allah right now that we will start doing the things for which we were sent to this life. Otherwise, we will be like that dumb guy who will fail the test on the Day of Judgement.

May Allah make it easy for us. Ameen.

The meaning of the word Allah in the Qur'an

Allah picture
Allah is the unique name of God in Islam. The word in Arabic means the one and only God, or the one who alone is worthy of being worshiped. Allah has described Himself with various names and attributes in the Qur'an; among them are: the One, the eternally Alive, the Self-subsisting Source of all beings, the Incomparable, the Omnipotent, Omniscient, the Source of Peace, the Compassionate and the Merciful, etc. Allah is the unique name of God in Islam. The word in Arabic means the one and only God, or the one who alone is worthy of being worshiped. Allah describes himself with various names and attributes in the Qur'an, including the One, the eternally Alive, the Self-subsisting Source of all beings, the Incomparable, the Omnipotent, Omniscient, the Source of Peace, the Compassionate and the Merciful, etc.

Allah says, "And God's [alone] are the attributes of perfection; invoke Him, then, by these, and stand aloof from all who distort the meaning of His attributes: they shall be requited for all that they were wont to do!" (Qur'an: 7: 180).

When the pagans asked the Messenger of Allah to describe his God, Allah revealed the surah of ikhlas, which sums up the essential Islamic creed of the Oneness and Unity of God. It reads: "Say, 'He is the One God, God the Eternal, the Uncaused Cause of All That Exists. He begets not, and neither is He begotten; and there is nothing that could be compared with Him." (Qur'an: 11: 1-4).

Quran Miracles - Reproduction

Today, we will be talking about a scientific fact, mentioned in the Quran, regarding the male reproductive system. It is important to point out that while the Quran is not a science textbook, many of the latest scientific discoveries that were revealed in Quranic passages 1400 years ago. This is in stark contrast with the Bible, which contains numerous scientific errors (due to corruption by the scribes: (Jer 8:8, Mat 5:20, 23:13). For example, regarding genetics, in Genesis 30:37-42, Jacob changes the characteristics of animal offspring by having their parents look at white stripes while mating.

FIRST
We will examine the Quranic verse that describes the location of seminal fluid prior to being discharged.
Literal translation of Quran 86:6-7:
{ (Man is) created from gushing water (which) comes out from between the backbone * and the ribs *. }
* from Al Qamoos, Lisan Al Arab, etc
In other words, just prior to gushing or coming out of the body, seminal fluid is located between the backbone and the ribs.

At first glance, a layman might think that SEMEN comes out from the testicles. While the SPERM is produced in the testicles, NEITHER is the sperm NOR is the seminal fluid (essential for natural fertilization) anywhere near them prior to ejaculation. The verse specifically mentions the entire fluid, and not just the sperm "component". So let's examine the process of emission, where all the components of semen are joined. Sperm is stored in the epididymis, which is not in the testicles, but above them. The Sperm which comprises 2 to 5% of the seminal fluid, , travels from the epididymis up through the Vas Deferens duct and around the bladder. Together, the seminal vesicle and the prostate gland produce 90% of the fluid in semen. This mixture travels through the prostate and is joined by mucus from the bulbourethral glands, just below the prostate.
http://www.webmd.com/sex-relationships/guide/male-reproductive-system?page=2
http://en.allexperts.com/e/s/se/semen.htm
http://en.allexperts.com/e/e/ej/ejaculation.htm

It is at this point that semen is fully formed, comprising both the sperm and the seminal fluids. As we can see, just prior to coming out of the body, all components of semen are mixed near the prostate, which is centered in the body, between the backbone and the ribs, or between the spine and the chest, which is between the back and front of the abdomen or torso, and most certainly not in the testicles or in the lower body at all.

Someone might object by saying: the ribs are too high to say "the prostate is between the backbone & the ribs." To this objection, we answer that: the head is still between the shoulders even though it is too high, & the genitals are still between the legs, even though they are too high.

Now let’s check the verse again.
{ (Man is) created from gushing water (which) comes out from between the backbone * and the ribs *. }
This precise scientific description could not have been known 1400 years ago, and even today most people don't know it, as we will see next.

SECOND
We will examine some false claims regarding the scientific accuracy of this verse.

In reference to this verse, answering-islam.org quotes mistake by Dr. William Campbell: "...we are left with the very real problem that the SEMEN IS COMING FROM the back or kidney area and not THE TESTICLES."
http://answering-islam.org/Quran/Science/semenproduction.htm
http://www.answering-islam.org/Campbell/s4c2b.html

In fact, SEMEN does NOT come from the testicles. (only the SPERM is produced there, which comprises 2-5% of semen). And as we saw earlier, SEMEN IS ACTUALLY FORMED NEAR THE PROSTATE.

Next, let's also listen to the false claims of the person discussislam: "This description reflects the view of Hippocrates, common in the 5th century…that SEMEN comes from all the fluid of the body & passes through the kidneys on the way to the penis. We now know that it comes from the testicles." First of all, DISCUSSISLAM also falsely claims semen comes from the testicles "We now know that it comes from the testicles". It's astonishing how those attacking Islam make the same layman errors, without checking their facts.

In any case, The Quran does not contain the scientific errors of Hippocrates view
1) That Semen comes from all the fluid in the body.
2) That Semen passes through the kidneys.
As such, contrary to DISCUSSISLAM's misrepresentation, there is no similarity whatsoever, between this Quranic passage, and the view of Hippocrates.

Furthermore, let's examine some more of Hippocrates related scientific errors, that are again NOT in the Quran:
1) sperm originate in the brain
2) men & women produce sperm
3) "healthy" sperm is produced by healthy parts of the body
4) stronger sperm results in males, weaker sperm results in females

IN CONCLUSION
The Quran clearly mentions the scientific fact, before it was known, about where semen becomes fully formed before "gushing" out. Semen includes the sperm AND seminal fluids, which are BOTH absolutely required for natural fertilization. The Quran accurately states that this fluid (gushing water) is between the backbone and the ribs prior to coming out of the body, as seen from the profile view of the male anatomy.

Those attempting to discredit this Quranic verse, simply demonstrate their own lack of scientific knowledge regarding the male reproductive system. In addition, trying to ascribe the numerous scientific accuracies from the Quran, to philosophers like Hippocrates, who could rarely AVOID scientific errors on any matter, is obviously quite ridiculous.

As we have demonstrated, misrepresenting both the scientific facts, and the views of ancient societies, is not only the strategy but a fundamental requirement for people attempting to refute the Quran’s overwhelming signs.

Al-Jahiz Foundress of Zoology

Hundreds of years before Western biologists sparked various theories, like evolution, natural selection, the struggle to live (struggle for existence), and the food chain, al-Jahiz in the 9th century AD have been revealing.

Al-Jahiz. That Abu Uthman Amr Ibn al-Kinani Bahral-Fuqaimi often nicknamed al-Basri. He is a renowned Muslim scholar in 9th century AD Al-Jahiz is legendary all-around Muslim scholar who mastered Arabic literature, Islamic sciences, biology, grammar, history, psychology, rhetoric, and zoology.

Al-Jahiz''is the greatest scientist and author with stunning style in the 9th century AD,''praised the Western scientist, Christopher Dawson. Its action as the great poet has made the Western world admired him. ''He was one of the greatest prose writers in classical Arabic literary world,''said Bernard Lewis. Similar praise also disclosed HAR Gibb and Philip K. Hitti.

Hitti famous with his book entitled History of the Arabs said,''Al-Jahiz is one prolific writer and to rap quoted scholars in Arabic literature.''Gibb called al-Jahiz as a writer who sparked Arabic prose style. All comments tar and praise it shows how al-Jahiz is phenomenal Muslim scholar whose work is able to penetrate the insulation of time and geography.

Besides known as a great poet of all time, al-Jahiz also had been instrumental in developing the biological sciences. Hundreds of years before Western biologists sparked various theories, like evolution, natural selection, the struggle to live (struggle forexistence), and the food chain, al-Jahiz in the 9th century AD have been revealing.

Unfortunately, the fruit has been claimed that he thought of Western civilization. Ironically, Muslims in the modern era did not know the achievements of Muslim scientists in the golden era. No wonder if sekolahsekolah in Indonesia's largest Islamic nations in the world-both public and religious schools do not teach it to their students an important discovery.

The biology students were taught only the West that has 'stolen' Islamic scholar and writer. As a result, they are more admired than the achievement of Western scientists in the era of Islamic Caliphate. Al-Jahiz original idea about a series of important theory in biology that, dipaparkannya in Kitab al-Hayawan (Book of Animals).

Kitab al-Hayawan is a free zoology which consists of seven volumes. In it, al-Jahiz peeling and describes more than 350 species of animals. The book is viewed by historians of science as a great and important work that has been afforded al-Jahiz for modern human civilization. In particular, al-Jahiz raikan has condemned the theory of evolution in his book. The theory is based on the influence of environment on animals. In addition, he also was thinking about the impact of environment on animal survival. This is the forerunner to the theory of struggle for existence.

In the same book, al-Jahiz elaborate ideas of natural selection and the food chain. Animals''was involved in a struggle to preserve his life; find food, avoid a prey species, and breed. Environmental factors influence organisms to develop new characteristics to ensure permanent survival, then transformed into a new species,''such a sound theory of stuggle for existence is written in the Kitab al-Hayawan.

Brilliant theories about animal science make feasible al-Jahiz ditabalkan as the foundation stone of modern zoology. So, who exactly al-Jahiz it? HAR Gibb revealed, al-Jahiz is the grandson of a black slave. He was born in Basrah, Iraq, in 781 AD

Indeed, al-Jahiz come from poor families who often wound around financial issues. He had become an orphan at the age of several months. Poverty does not make the family of al-Jahiz surrender. The mother encourages her son to keep learning. Al-Jahiz mother schooled the Qur'anic school in his native land.

At that time, al-Jahiz like to hang out with a bevy of young men in a mosque in Basra. There, they discussed a wide range of science subjects. Al-Jahiz and then learning from a line of scientists. He continued his studies until the age of 25 years. Dilute and brilliant brain make it able to master a variety of knowledge.

His will is hard to master the various science trigger it to be more diligent in reading. All written and important works dilahapnya, including the Greek translation of books and Greek philosophy, especially Aristotle fruit. Gleaming metropolis of Baghdad as the world's intellectuals have also attracted the attention of al-Jahiz. He then decided to move to the center of the Abbasid Dynasty.

One of the first place that he came in Baghdad is Baital-boon or House of Wisdom-study center and the largest in the world of science. He is taking advantage of opportunities provided by the Caliph, who liked to science to develop his abilities.

When settled in Basra, al-Jahiz already known as a writer. Since childhood, his mother had instilled a love of books. Once, one day his mother offered him a tray full of notebooks. Her mother then said that he will get a life of writing. Writing then became an integral part of life in the life of al-Jahiz. During his life, he has authored more than 450 titles. That's what makes Philp K Hitti mendaulatnya as one of the scientists terproduktif Muslim. Unfortunately, that still remains and persist through space and time is just 30 titles.

There is also a belief, the scientist was born on December 868 AD However, the cause of death is unclear. Illicit Pig Wisdom

It is important to note, especially by our youth who often go to these countries of Europe and America, which makes pork as a staple food in their dishes.

On this occasion, I sitir back events that took place when Imam Muhammad 'Abduh visited France. They asked him about the secret Prohibition pig in Islam. They asked the priest, "You (Muslims) say that the pig is haraam, because he ate garbage containing tapeworm, microbes and other bacteria. It's now gone. Because pigs bred in modern farming, with guaranteed hygiene, and inadequate sterilization processes. How could the pigs were infected with tapeworms or bacteria and other microbes.? "

Imam Muhammad 'Abduh did not directly answer that question, and with the cleverness he asked them to bring the two roosters and one hen, and two pigs one male and female pigs.

Knowing this, they asked, "What's all this?" He replied, "Fulfill what I asked, then I'll show you a secret."

They fulfill what he pleaded. Then he ordered the release of two roosters together one hens in one cage. The two roosters were fighting and killing each other, to get the hens for himself, until one of them almost died. He then ordered that both the chicken coop.

Then he ordered them to remove the two male pigs together with a female pig. This time they witness the weirdness. Boar which one helps his fellow males to perform sexual intent, without jealousy, without pride or desire to keep the sow from her friend.

After that, she said, "Gentlemen, pork kill 'ghirah' people who eat them. That's what happened to you. A man of you saw his wife with another man, and left him without jealousy, and a father of you saw her daughter with a foreign man, and you let him without jealousy, and anxiety, because it spread the pork on their properties people who eat them. "

Then he gives an excellent example of Islamic Shari'a. Namely Islam forbids several types of livestock and poultry that roam around us, who ate his own feces. Sharia ordered for people who want enyembelih chicken, duck or goose who ate his own feces in order to lock him in three days, feeding him and paying attention to what was consumed by the animal. Until the net belly of dirt that contains bacteria and microbes. Because this disease will be passed to humans, without being noticed and felt by people who eat them.

That is the law of God, as God's wisdom.

Modern science has revealed many of the diseases caused by eating pork. Part of it is mentioned by Dr. Murad Hoffman, a German Muslim, in his book "Tribulation Thought: German Muslim Diaries", page 130-131:
"Eating pork worm infected pigs not only dangerous, but can also cause increase the amount of cholesterol and slow the process of decomposition of proteins in the body, resulting in the possibility of colon cancer, skin irritation, eczema, and rheumatism. Did not we already know, viruses are dangerous to live and thrive in the summer because of a medium pig? "

Dr. Muhammad Abdul Khair, in his book at Ijtihâdât fi Tafsir al Qur'an al Karim,
page 112, mentions some of the diseases caused by pork meat: "Meat contains the seeds of pork tapeworm, and worms trachenea lolipia. These worms will be passed to humans who consume meat pigs. It is noteworthy, until recently, generation of swine has not been liberated from these worms. Other diseases that are transmitted by a lot of pork, including:

1st. Swine cholera. That is a dangerous disease caused by virus
2. Miscarriage of pus, caused by bacteria prosillia pigs.
3. Skin redness, a fierce and protracted. The first can cause death in some cases, and the second cause joint disorders.
4. Peels disease.
5. Eskares parasite, which is harmful to humans.

The following facts are enough to make someone to get away from the pig:

1st. The pig is the animal that greed is unmatched in other animals eat. He ate all the food in front of him. If the stomach is full or the food had expired, he would regurgitate the contents of his stomach and eat it again, to satisfy greed. He will not stop eating, even eat vomit.
2. He ate all of which can be eaten in front of him. Ate dirt anything in front of him, whether human sewage, animal or plant, even eat their own dung, until there is nothing left to eat in front of him.
3. He peed on kotoranya and eat when they're in front of him, then eat it again.
4. He was eating garbage, rotten-busukan, and dung.
5. He was the only mammals that eat the soil, eat it in large quantities and for a long time, if left unchecked.
6. People who ate pork skin will remove this smell.
7. Modern scientific research in the two Eastern and Western countries, namely China and Sweden-China pagan majority, while Sweden's predominantly secular states: pork is a major cause of rectal and colon cancer. The percentage of patients with this disease in countries whose inhabitants eat pigs, has increased drastically. Especially in the countries of Europe, and America, as well as in Asian countries (like China and India). Meanwhile in Islamic countries, the percentage is very low, approximately 1 / 1000. The results of this study was published in 1986, the Annual World Conference on Tools Digestive Diseases, held in Sao Paulo.

Now we know how great wisdom God forbid meat and lard. For
known, pengharaman not only pork, but also all the processed food with pork fat, such as some types of candy and chocolate, also some type of bread topped with pork fat poured. In conclusion, all the things that use animal fats should be considered before eaten. We do not eat it but after making sure that food does not contain pork fat or oil, so we do not fall into disobedience against God Almighty, and not affected by the underlying dangers of Allah forbid meat and lard.

Makkah is the place which captures the hearts of a billion Muslims all over the globe. It is the place where God's will was revealed to Muhammad, (peace be upon him), and it is now the location of the Holy Mosque and the scared Ka'ba. It is also the destination of millions of pilgrims and visitors and the holiest spot on earth.

God (called Allah in Arabic) has honored it in His Holy Book (Quran), in which it is given eleven different names, including: Makkah, Bakkah, Al-Balad Al-Amin, Al-Balad Al-Ameen, Al-Haram Al-Amain and Um-Al-Qura. God also refers to Makkah in several verses of the Holy Quran (also Koran) using other names, and has sworn on its name, thus giving a unique status unrivalled by any other city in the world.

It was also the will of God that the Holy Ka'ba be situated in Makkah. This divine will has affected the building and growth of the city as it is today.

The first Sura of the Holy Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) on the outskirts of Makkah. These revelations to the Prophet continued later, and some verses of the Holy Quran are known as Makki, because they were revealed in Makkah, while others were called Madani because they were revealed in Madinah.

It was in and around Makkah that the early Moslems launched their "Jihad" (Holy Struggle) against polytheism, heresy and idolarty. It was here that God gave victory to His Prophet and his fellow-believers when they triumphantly entered Makkah in the 8th year after Hijra (630 AD), ending the state of polytheism and exalting the name of Allah, the one and only God. The idols were destroyed, God's House was purified and Makkah became a secure and sacred city. Moslems all over the world turn their faces in prayer five times ad day towards the Ka'ba in Makkah and begin and end their pilgrimage with a "tawaf" (circumambulation) of it.

The tale of the building of Makkah, the Holy Mosque and the Ka'ba is well-known, as are the events which took place in the city following the era of Abraham and Ishmael. We will therefore begin our description of Makkah with the founding of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. When the future of the Holy City was a paramount consideration.

LOCATION:
Makkah is at the intersection of latitude 21 to 25 degree north and longitude 39 to 49 degree east. It is set in a rugged landscape consisting mostly of solid granite, with rocks sometimes reaching 300 meters (1,000 feet) above see level.

Makkah is enclosed by the Valley of Abraham, which is surrounded by two nearby mountain ranges to the east, west and south. The northern range comprises the Al-Falaq and Qu'aqi'an mountains, while the southern range consists of Abu Hudaidah mountain to the west, Kuday to the south and Abu Qubais and Khindimah to the south-east.

There are three main entrances to Makkah: Al-Mu'allat (also known as Al-Hujoon), Al-Musfalah and Al-Shubaikah.

It is generally agreed that Al-Mu'allat includes all areas which are higher than the Holy Haram and Al-Musfalah covers all areas that are lowers.

Science and Islam

Science and Islam provides a detailed account of the relationship between Islam and science from the emergence of the Islamic scientific tradition in the eighth century to the present time. This relationship has gone through three distinct phases. The first phase began with the emergence of science in the Islamic civilization in the eighth century and ended with the rise of modern science in the West; the second period is characterized by the arrival of modern science in the Muslim world, most of which at that time was under colonial occupation; and the third period, which began around 1950, is characterized by a more mature approach to the major questions that modern science has posed for all religious traditions.

Based on primary sources, the book presents a panorama of Islamic views on some of the major issues in the current science and religion discourse. Written in accessible language, Science and Islam is an authentic account of the multi-faceted and complex issues that arise at the interface of Islamic intellectual tradition and science. Rich in historical details, the book is a fascinating survey of the interaction of Islamic beliefs with the enterprise of science.
